Week In Review: (July 7, 2021-July 16, 2021)

Each day USMWF extensively researches articles regarding work incidents, illnesses and diseases to share with you recognizing those we have lost.  But, also to gain attention to such losses to prevent similar incidents, illnesses and diseases from occurring. 

USMWF knows and understand that these articles represent only a few of the 14 workers lost each day due to a work related incident in the United States as not every incident is recognized by the local media.

We never forget those that went to work and never came home to their families and we hope that you remember them and their stories.

A construction worker has died after a drilling rig that was being used to move heavy equipment fell on top of him while he was working.

The deadly incident happened on Tuesday at approximately 8:30 p.m. local time in downtown Philadelphia near a train station. Heavy equipment was being moved off a tractor-trailer to a construction site when a drilling rig that was being used to lift equipment in the area fell onto a worker, fire officials told ABC Philadelphia station WPVI.

A worker was killed Wednesday morning in a fatal crash on Interstate 77 in York County that blocked traffic for hours, officials said.

The worker was a contractor working on a trash truck picking up debris around 1:30 a.m. along the highway near mile marker 89 in the northbound lanes, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Troopers say a sanitation worker was killed after being hit by a vehicle on I-77 in York County while picking up debris.  The incident happened just before 1:30am on I-77 Northbound near exit 89, which is approximately five miles north of Fort Mill.

The identity of the Douglas County employee who died on the job has been released.

County officials say 47-year-old Robert Brown passed away on Sunday morning, as a result of injuries suffered while performing duties related to his job. Brown was a County Building and Maintenance Worker.

A 54-year-old man from Benkelman died Sunday after he was pinned between two semitrailer trucks in Wauneta, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

Brian Stute had parked his semi at a grain elevator near an intersection to unload a trailer full of grain, State Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas wrote in an email.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — An underground coal mine worker in West Virginia died after an incident in January because the operator of the mine did not have rules in place to prevent such accidents, a federal review has concluded.

A North Carolina city employee has been killed in a mowing accident, officials said.

Washington City Manager Jonathan Russell said the unidentified employee was mowing a ditch bank along a drainage canal behind two businesses around noon on Tuesday when his tractor rolled over him and killed him, news outlets reported.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A worker in Cleveland’s Department of Urban Forestry died in an incident that happened Wednesday afternoon in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, according to the city’s Twitter account and labor representative.

(July 16, 2021) -WXYZ Detroit

(WXYZ) — A worker at the Dearborn Works steel mill died on Friday morning after a fall.

A spokesperson for Cleveland-Cliffs said the employee was conducting maintenance activity in the plan and experienced a fall. The employee was taken to the hospital but died of their injuries.

(July 15, 2021)-

HILLSDALE – A contractor working on the marina at Hillsdale Lake died after suffering a medical emergency and falling into the lake, according to a press release from Miami County Sheriff’s Office.

Andrew Jones, 23, Gravois Mills, Mo., a worker at the site, had a medical issue and fell into the lake Thursday, July 15. Three other employees were at the scene and jumped into the lake in an attempt to save Jones, but due to the combination of the depth and dark color of the water, were unsuccessful.
